Porsche
Porsches 356’s were quite successful in endurance races, and were often seen back at the “arrivée”. With their relatively small engines they very often won their class, and shared the overall podium with bigger engine cars.
Their success was no exception for this endurance marathon to Sofia. In 1961, 1 out of 10 cars was a Porsche 356. The 356 was losing ground however: in 1964 the Porsche number had decreased to just 1 out of 105 cars.
It was the brave Sander-Trinon team who eventually took the honors to drive the last and only Porsche in the 1964 Liège-Sofia-Liège edition. To prove the quality of their Porsche 356B 1600, super 90: they finished 1st in class and 8th overall two and a half hours after the winner Aaltonen-Ambrose (Austin Healey).
Guy and Willy Sander (father and son) were very loyal to Porsche:
The 901, later dubbed 911 never took part in the Liege Sofia Liege rally since it only appeared after the last Liege Sofia Liege in September 1964.
